  • With Wonga, your prosperity could count on an algorithm

You can borrow money in minutes from Wonga – as long as its secret algorithm says yes. But should we worry that mathematics is replacing human judgment in the lending industry? A few years ago, I interviewed the author and cultural jedi Malcolm Gladwell and the conversation digressed on to first impressions. Gladwell was explaining, in trademark style, that he was no fan of job interviews – in ...

  • If needed, let a flip-flop be

IN abolishing and not offering an option for PPSMI (the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English), the Education Ministry has cited as a main supporting argument a Unesco report that children learn best in the beginning using their own mother tongues “Muhyiddin: Decision to abolish PPSMI made after much thought” ( The Star , Oct 16).

  • Seeing Stars In Stocks By Using Averted Vision

Boy Scout camp was a helluva learning experience. Don't look anything straight in the face. Gaze at a 30 degree angle. Astronomy, a mathematics based science, is oddly transferable to Wall Street. Economic forecasters are next to useless now because they can only stare directly at statistics and need too much confirmation for a hypothesis before calling for a recession. Few egg heads ever catch ...

  • PPSMI - An Opposing View

By Feizrul Nor Bin Nurbi I read with interest the ongoing debate regarding PPSMI as published in most dailies' 'Letters to the Editor' section. Perhaps I am stretching it a bit by calling it a debate when it is clear that only one side's arguments are prominent, and they are the views of the proponents of PPSMI. Do allow me to give an opposing view. From what I gather by reading the countless ...

  • At top when taught, not on research

"Over the period, large increases are seen in students studying clinical and biological sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and architecture, building and planning. The only subjects to see decreases in the absolute number of students between 2003-04 and 2009-10 are computer science and historical and philosophical studies. Both, however, show increases in the last year."
